Leader of the herd
Horses naturally establish a hierarchy of leadership and dominance within a herd. Simple body language and positioning are generally all it takes for a respected leader to communicate with his herd.
Flame is this way. He is sensitive and alert. The other horses defer to him without resistance. When Flame moves through the pen, the other horses make way. We sometimes see Dollar hanging out with Flame. Because Dollar isn’t threatening to Flame’s authority, he makes an easy companion.
His best friend and teammate is Jack. They’re a bonded pair of Suffolk Punch geldings. Weighing in at approximately 1700 pounds, Flame is the biggest horse on our farm.
If you are interested in discussing our programs further, join us as we walk into the herd to meet the horses.
